In Lubero, WFP commends progress in the wheat value chain driven by AALI, IITA and the Virunga Foundation. A delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP) visited Lubero to learn more about the activities implemented by AALI, in consortium with IITA and the Virunga Foundation, to strengthen the wheat value chain.Considered a driver of economic and social development, the wheat value chain aims to improve the incomes and self-reliance of smallholder farmers while contributing to the supply of local milling facilities.
The smallholder farmers met during the visit shared their positive experiences with the technical and agricultural support they have received.
The WFP delegation also discovered the small-scale mechanization pilot for wheat threshing and commended the work of AALI’s youth brigade, which helps facilitate the movement of equipment to different harvesting sites. Initially launched with 350 farmers, the project now supports 3,000 smallholder farmers for the upcoming Season A, with the support of the European Union.
This expansion highlights the potential of the wheat value chain and reflects AALI’s vision of making agriculture a driver of economic development.
