In the Lukelenge cluster, in Kasaï-Oriental, a new momentum is taking shape in the fisheries sector. Supported by the AALI Youth Brigade, local fish farmers harvested and sold approximately three tons of fish, while 104,000 fry were distributed to producers across the cluster.
This initiative marks a significant step forward for aquaculture development in this part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where fish farming remains an underdeveloped yet high-potential sector. By strengthening local production capacities, the project contributes directly to improving food security, generating income, and revitalizing rural livelihoods.
Beyond the numbers, the impact is visible at the community level. Fish farmers in Lukelenge are gaining better access to quality fry, technical support, and structured production systems. The distribution of 104,000 fry is not only an input supply effort—it represents an investment in productivity, resilience, and long-term sustainability of local aquaculture value chains.
Mr. Taylor Lubangi, Office Manager of the Fisheries and Livestock Division, emphasized the importance of such actions:
“In our country, the fishing and livestock sector is the weakest link… Activities like this must be supported.”
His statement reflects a broader reality. In many rural areas, fisheries and livestock remain underfinanced despite their critical role in nutrition, employment, and economic stability. Targeted support, particularly for youth-led initiatives, can help unlock this potential.
Through the AALI Youth Brigade’s engagement in Lukelenge, young leaders are contributing to practical, field-based solutions—boosting fish production, supporting smallholder farmers, and reinforcing local food systems.
As the harvest reaches local markets and fry continue to be stocked in ponds, the initiative demonstrates how coordinated action at community level can strengthen aquaculture ecosystems and support sustainable agricultural transformation in Kasaï-Oriental.
