Following the launch of the Bongola Fulu-Initiative in November 2025, the African Agricultural Leadership Institute (AALI), in partnership with Rikolto and with financial support from the Brussels-Capital Region, continues to promote source waste sorting and sustainable organic waste management at Kinshasa markets (Elites Plus Media).
Women vendors at INDU Market in the Masina municipality have participated in hands-on training to separate biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste and prepare organic materials for daily collection. These practical sessions aim to create a sustainable market waste valorization chain, transforming organic waste into high-quality compost for local agriculture.
This initiative supports multiple objectives:
- Enhancing urban sanitation by reducing unmanaged market waste,
- Supporting local agriculture through compost production,
- Generating green jobs for youth and women,
- Advancing a circular economy model in urban communities.
The Bongola Fulu-Initiative reflects AALI’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive agricultural solutions, linking urban waste management with rural agricultural productivity. The collaboration with Rikolto and the financial backing from the Brussels-Capital Region strengthen technical training, community engagement, and the development of market-based waste-to-value practices that benefit both people and the environment.
By fostering practical skills among market vendors and promoting behavioral change, the initiative is building a foundation for responsible urban waste management, productive agricultural inputs, and inclusive economic opportunities across Kinshasa.
